Which has better campus life: Columbia or Notre Dame?

I’m trying to figure out which school would feel more fun and social as a student. Columbia seems great because it’s in New York City, but Notre Dame seems like it might have a stronger traditional campus vibe.

I’m mostly curious about which one feels more active, social, and overall enjoyable to live on as an undergraduate.

The biggest practical tradeoff is city-based freedom at Columbia versus a built-in residential community at Notre Dame. Columbia gives you New York City as part of student life, so social options are huge, but a lot of the “fun” happens off campus and takes more initiative. Notre Dame is more self-contained, with residence halls, traditions, school spirit, and campus events playing a much bigger role in everyday undergraduate life.

For campus life specifically, Notre Dame usually feels more active and cohesive. Its dorm system is a major part of social life, and students often talk about strong hall identity, traditions, intramurals, and a visible undergraduate community throughout the week and on weekends. Football weekends, campus-wide events, and a strong loyalty to school traditions give it the classic college atmosphere many students picture.

Columbia can absolutely be social and exciting, but the experience is different. The energy often comes from being in Manhattan rather than from one tightly unified campus culture. Students have access to restaurants, internships, performances, neighborhoods, and nightlife, but campus social life itself is often described as more independent and less centered on shared traditions. Some students love that freedom, while others find it less communal.

If your question is specifically which school has the stronger traditional undergraduate campus life, Notre Dame has the edge. If your idea of “fun” depends more on constant access to a major city and creating your own scene, Columbia can be more exciting.
