How do campus traditions compare at Columbia and Notre Dame?

Notre Dame has the stronger, more visible shared tradition culture, and it is likely to shape daily student life more consistently than Columbia’s. Its residential halls, Catholic identity, and football weekends create recurring rituals that involve large parts of the undergraduate community. Columbia has memorable traditions too, but they tend to be more event-based and coexist with a campus culture oriented toward New York City.

At Notre Dame, residence halls are central social units, each with its own identity, events, intramural teams, and alumni connections. Campus-wide practices such as visiting the Grotto, attending Mass for students who participate in religious life, and gathering around football games give the academic year a recognizable rhythm. Even students who are not Catholic often encounter these traditions as part of the campus atmosphere, rather than as isolated activities.

Columbia’s best-known traditions, including Orgo Night, the Varsity Show, Bacchanal, Primal Scream, and the holiday tree lighting, can be lively and distinctive. They are not usually the organizing force of everyday life in the same way, though. Many students build their routines around clubs, internships, cultural events, and neighborhoods across Manhattan, so social life can feel more individualized and outward-facing.

The two campuses also differ in how traditions bring students together. Notre Dame’s traditions often emphasize collective school spirit, especially around athletics and residential life; it is easier to feel connected to a single campus-wide identity. Columbia’s community is intellectually intense and socially active, but its traditions are more eclectic, shaped by separate schools within the university and by the city beyond the gates.
