Which Has Better Residential Life: Columbia or Rice?

Rice has the more cohesive and engaging residential-life system for a student who wants housing to be the center of campus community. Its residential colleges are not just dorm assignments: students remain affiliated with their college throughout all four years, including when they move off campus. Columbia provides solid housing and plenty of student activity, but its residential experience is more decentralized. First-year residence halls can foster close floor-level friendships, while many upperclass students live in apartment-style University housing around Morningside Heights. Columbia’s social life is also shaped heavily by New York City, student organizations, and the broader campus rather than by a permanent house affiliation.
