UChicago usually feels more relentlessly academic in day-to-day undergraduate life, while Columbia’s intellectual culture is equally serious but more mixed with the energy of New York, pre-professional interests, and a wider spread of student priorities. At UChicago, the Core is famous for making big-idea discussion part of ordinary student life, and that often spills out of class into dorm conversations, student publications, and late-night debates. Columbia also has a Core, but the overall atmosphere tends to feel a bit less enclosed because students are constantly moving between campus and the city.

In the classroom, UChicago often has the reputation for enjoying argument for its own sake. Students are more likely to lean into theory, abstraction, and pushing an idea until it breaks, especially in the humanities and social sciences.
