How does the campus size of Columbia University compare with Rice University?

Rice University has the much larger and more physically expansive undergraduate campus. Rice therefore offers a far broader, more self-contained campus footprint, with residential colleges, academic buildings, athletic facilities, and green space spread across a park-like setting.

Columbia’s compact size is a defining part of its experience rather than a limitation in the usual sense. Its Morningside campus is organized around dense, walkable quads and landmarks such as Low Library, Butler Library, and College Walk, but it sits directly within Manhattan and blends into the surrounding Morningside Heights neighborhood. Students have immediate access to the city, though the physical campus itself can feel concentrated and vertical.

Rice has a clearer traditional-campus boundary and substantially more open space. It is adjacent to Houston’s Museum District and near Hermann Park, yet its academic and residential life is centered within its own large grounds. Columbia also operates additional campuses, including the Manhattanville development and the medical center in Washington Heights, but those are separate from the principal undergraduate campus and do not make the day-to-day Morningside experience comparable in scale to Rice.
