Which is better for undergraduate research opportunities, Case Western or University of Michigan?

For early, accessible undergraduate research, Case Western often has the edge. It is smaller, very research-focused, and undergrads can be more visible to professors and labs from the start. Michigan offers a huge amount of research, but because it is much larger, finding a spot can take more initiative and persistence, especially in popular departments.

Case Western tends to suit the student who wants a closer academic environment where emailing a professor as a first-year is more likely to lead to a real conversation and a manageable path into a lab. Its strong connections to nearby medical and research institutions, especially around health, engineering, and biomedical work, create a lot of opportunities that are tightly integrated with the undergraduate experience.

Michigan fits the student who wants scale, range, and the chance to explore many different research ecosystems. There are outstanding opportunities across science, engineering, social science, public policy, and humanities, and the university has substantial infrastructure for undergraduate research. But at a place that large, access is not always automatic. Motivated students do break in early, though it often requires sending many emails, attending office hours, using formal research programs, and being proactive about follow-through.

If your main question is not where research exists, but where it is easier to access quickly as an undergrad without much prior experience, I would lean Case Western. If you are excited by a very large university and are comfortable navigating a more competitive, self-directed environment to reach high-level opportunities, Michigan can be fantastic.
