Is Notre Dame worth the higher cost compared with Purdue for undergrad?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus environment and network. Purdue will usually give you a far lower price for a strong, well-known undergraduate education, especially in engineering, computer science, and many technical fields. Notre Dame can justify a higher cost for some students because it offers a smaller, more residential undergraduate experience, very strong alumni loyalty, and broad brand value that can be especially useful in business, consulting, finance, and certain preprofessional paths.

Academically, this is not a case where the more expensive school is automatically better across the board. Purdue is outstanding in engineering and STEM and has real scale, research activity, and employer recognition. Notre Dame tends to feel more personal at the undergraduate level, with a tighter campus community, more emphasis on the residential college experience, and strong access to professors and alumni.

For career outcomes, the question is less “which school wins?” and more “what are you studying, and how much debt will you take on?” If you want engineering, CS, or another technical field, Purdue often makes the financial argument very hard to ignore because employers already know and respect it. If you are aiming at fields where relationships, alumni pull, and a polished undergraduate network matter a lot, Notre Dame’s network can be a real advantage.

Student experience is also meaningfully different. Notre Dame has a distinctive campus culture, strong school spirit, a close-knit residential system, and a more self-contained social atmosphere. Purdue is larger and can offer more scale and variety, but it may feel less intimate.

My honest view is that Notre Dame is only worth the higher cost if the extra money does not require heavy borrowing, or if you strongly prefer its campus culture and are entering a field where its alumni network could materially help. If the price gap would mean substantial debt, Purdue is very often the smarter undergraduate investment.
