Is Notre Dame worth the cost compared with Boston University for college?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Notre Dame offers a more traditional residential campus with a uniquely strong alumni network and school spirit, while Boston University gives you a major-city experience with excellent access to internships during the school year. If Notre Dame is much more expensive, the question is whether that tighter campus community and especially its alumni reach are worth the extra debt. In pure career terms, both are respected national universities, so the price gap matters a lot.

Notre Dame tends to stand out for undergraduate community, loyalty of its alumni base, and a brand that carries a lot of weight across many fields. Its residential system and campus culture are unusually cohesive, and that often translates into strong mentoring and a very engaged post-grad network. For some students, that network is one of the few real reasons paying more can make sense.

Boston University’s value is different. BU is deeply tied to Boston, which means easier access to internships, hospitals, research, media, startups, and employers during the academic year. It can be especially appealing for students who want independence and city energy over a self-contained campus. The BU degree is absolutely well respected, and many students turn the location into concrete job experience before senior year.

Where Notre Dame can be worth the premium is if you know you want the campus environment it does better than almost anyone: strong traditions, a close undergraduate culture, and a powerful alumni identity that stays active long after graduation. Where it is not worth a big premium is when the extra cost would require substantial loans, because BU still provides strong academics and real professional access.

My view is that Notre Dame is only worth clearly more if the added cost is manageable for your family and you strongly value its specific community and network. If the difference would create meaningful debt, BU is likely the smarter buy because the outcome gap is not large enough to justify stretching financially.
