Is Notre Dame or UVA worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?
I’m trying to decide whether applying to Notre Dame or UVA makes sense financially. Both seem like strong schools, but the tuition and overall cost feel really high compared with my in-state options.
I’m mostly wondering how people think about whether the extra cost is actually worth it in terms of value after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is paying a premium now for a school with a very strong national brand, alumni network, and residential experience versus keeping costs lower with an in-state option that may deliver similar career outcomes for far less debt. Notre Dame and UVA both have excellent placement, but UVA often becomes much more financially sensible only for Virginia residents, while Notre Dame is a private university with high sticker price for everyone. In other words, the question is usually not whether they are “worth it” in the abstract, but whether the extra cost over your cheapest solid option is small enough to justify.
Notre Dame can be worth the price if the aid package is strong or if your family can pay without major borrowing. Its alumni network is unusually loyal and active, and that matters in fields like finance, consulting, business, and certain national job markets. It also offers a very cohesive campus culture and undergraduate focus that some students value enough to pay more for.
UVA is easier to justify for in-state students because the value proposition changes a lot when tuition is lower. It has an outstanding reputation, especially in business, policy, government, and East Coast recruiting, and it offers the resources of a major public flagship. For out-of-state students, UVA can become much harder to defend financially unless the cost gap versus your alternatives is modest.
A useful way to think about it is debt tolerance. If attending Notre Dame or UVA would require large loans, especially more than what you expect to earn comfortably in your first year after graduation, the extra prestige usually is not enough to make that a smart financial choice. If the difference is manageable, then school-specific strengths, alumni access, and campus fit can reasonably tip the decision.
My view is that UVA is often worth it for in-state students, Notre Dame is worth it when aid makes the net price competitive, and either one becomes questionable when compared with a much cheaper in-state option that still has solid outcomes.
