WashU vs University of Copenhagen for study abroad: which is better for a semester abroad?

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure versus immersion. WashU gives you a very polished, highly supported semester in a U.S. campus environment with easy social integration and familiar academics, while the University of Copenhagen offers a much deeper international and cultural experience but usually asks more independence from you day to day. If your priority is comfort, campus life, and a smoother transition, WashU is easier. If your priority is living in a major European capital and getting a true abroad experience rather than a version of home, Copenhagen stands out.

For the semester itself, WashU is likely to feel more straightforward socially. It has a defined residential campus, active student organizations, and a cohesive undergraduate environment, so plugging into student life can happen quickly. Academically, it is well regarded across many fields, and the classroom style will be familiar to most U.S. students.

The University of Copenhagen is strong academically too, but the experience is different in a useful way. You are in a real city rather than a contained campus, and daily life in Copenhagen becomes part of the education. That often means more independence, more interaction with international students, and more exposure to Danish and European perspectives, but it can also take more effort to build community if you are only there for one semester.

Culturally, Copenhagen usually offers more value for a study abroad semester because the location changes your daily routine in a meaningful way. The city is very livable, internationally connected, and easy to explore, which matters when your goal is not just taking classes but actually feeling abroad. WashU can absolutely be a great semester, but for a high school senior specifically thinking about study abroad, it does not deliver the same degree of cultural contrast.

WashU is the safer and more seamless option, while the University of Copenhagen is the more memorable one. For a semester abroad, I would lean Copenhagen unless you know you want a highly structured campus experience and would rather minimize uncertainty.
