At Penn, students can intern part-time during the academic year with local companies, hospitals, nonprofits, startups, law firms, and financial organizations. Penn’s large Philadelphia-area alumni base and campus recruiting relationships also make informational interviews and referrals more accessible.

Penn is particularly well positioned for careers tied to the city’s major sectors: health care and life sciences, finance, consulting, technology, higher education, government, real estate, and nonprofits. Being on campus also makes it easier to attend employer events, alumni panels, and interviews without travel costs or scheduling barriers.

WashU has a strong national reputation and an active alumni network, so attending WashU would not prevent you from beginning a career in Philadelphia. A WashU student could target Philadelphia through alumni outreach, summer internships, study-away or summer housing plans, and applications to national employers with Philadelphia offices. However, you would be competing for many of those connections from St. Louis rather than building relationships through repeated in-person contact during the school year.

For a student who already expects to live and work in Philadelphia after college, Penn is the clearer choice. WashU is a compelling option if its academic programs, campus culture, or financial package fit substantially better, but Penn offers the more direct runway into the Philadelphia job market.
