Which school is better for internships: UCLA or Penn State?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and employer access versus a more traditional college-town recruiting environment. UCLA gives students a major advantage for internships simply because it sits in Los Angeles, where entertainment, media, tech, startups, healthcare, nonprofits, and corporate offices are all nearby during the school year. Penn State has solid recruiting and a very loyal alumni network, but many students rely more on summer internships or have to travel for opportunities that are not as close to campus.

For internships overall, UCLA usually has the edge. Being in Westwood means students can realistically intern during fall, winter, or spring, not just in the summer, and that can add up to more experience by graduation. UCLA students also benefit from access to the broader Southern California market, including companies in LA, Santa Monica, Culver City, Pasadena, and even connections into Orange County.

Penn State is definitely not weak here. It has strong employer ties in fields like engineering, business, supply chain, and some science areas, and its alumni base can be very helpful when it comes to referrals and career momentum. But the practical reality is that University Park is more isolated, so internship access often depends more on career fairs, planned recruiting pipelines, and willingness to relocate during breaks.

Your major matters a lot. For film, media, communications, entertainment, public affairs, psychology-related applied work, and many pre-health experiences, UCLA is especially well positioned. For certain corporate, manufacturing, engineering, and East Coast oriented pathways, Penn State can still deliver strong results, but it is less naturally convenient day to day.

If the question is strictly which school tends to offer better access to internships overall, I’d lean UCLA. Penn State can absolutely lead to excellent internships, but UCLA’s location creates more frequent and flexible opportunities while you are still in school, and that is hard to beat.
