UCLA or Michigan State for business: which is the better choice overall?

I’m trying to decide between UCLA and Michigan State for business and want to understand which one is generally seen as the stronger choice.

I’m thinking about things like overall reputation, career opportunities, and whether one school would give me a better experience for studying business.

The biggest practical tradeoff is prestige and location versus direct access to an undergraduate business school. UCLA carries broader national and international name recognition, especially because of its overall academic reputation and Los Angeles location, but it does not offer a traditional undergraduate business major in the same way Michigan State does. Michigan State, through the Broad College of Business, gives you a more straightforward business-focused undergraduate experience with established business majors, recruiting, and coursework built around that path.

For business specifically, Michigan State is often the cleaner choice if you want to study business from the start and be surrounded by a large undergraduate business community. Broad is well known and offers the kind of structured undergraduate business experience many students expect, including majors like finance, accounting, marketing, and supply chain.

UCLA is still extremely valuable, but the path is different. Students interested in business often pursue economics, business economics, mathematics/economics, or a related field, then use internships, clubs, and the LA network to build toward finance, consulting, entrepreneurship, or marketing. UCLA’s brand is powerful, and being in Los Angeles can create strong access to internships during the school year, but the experience is less centered on a dedicated undergrad business curriculum.

In terms of overall reputation, UCLA has the stronger all-around institutional name. In terms of undergraduate business study itself, Michigan State is more purpose-built. If cost is similar and you care most about overall prestige and broader name recognition, UCLA is the one more people will view as the bigger-name school.
