UCLA vs Columbia for media careers: which is better for networking and internships?

I’m trying to decide between UCLA and Columbia and I want to work in media after college, maybe in entertainment, journalism, or digital media.

Both schools seem strong, but I’m not sure which one would give me better networking, internship, and job opportunities for that career path.

Columbia has the edge if you want the broadest media access across journalism, publishing, news, and digital media, while UCLA is especially powerful for entertainment and screen-based industries. Columbia’s location in New York puts you close to major newsrooms, magazines, publishers, streaming companies, ad agencies, and media startups during the school year. UCLA, by contrast, benefits from being embedded in Los Angeles, where film, television, talent agencies, production companies, and entertainment marketing are part of the local ecosystem.

For networking, Columbia offers unusually direct proximity to media professionals who are actively working in Manhattan, which matters because informational interviews, part-time internships, and semester-time networking events are easier when the industry is right outside campus. That is especially valuable if your interests lean toward journalism, political media, magazine writing, documentary, business media, or digital content tied to major national outlets.

For internships, UCLA stands out if your version of media is entertainment. Los Angeles makes it much easier to plug into studio internships, development roles, production work, entertainment PR, and jobs connected to creators, agents, and streaming content. UCLA also has a strong reputation in film, television, and creative industries, and being nearby helps with the informal side of career building in entertainment, where repeated in-person contact can matter a lot.

The key difference is that Columbia gives you a wider all-media platform, while UCLA gives you a more targeted launchpad into entertainment media. If you are still genuinely split among journalism, digital media, and entertainment, Columbia is the safer bet because it keeps more lanes open without sacrificing access. If you already know Hollywood-facing media is the real goal, UCLA’s location can be hard to beat.
