Vanderbilt usually comes across as the more consistently preppy of the two. In everyday student life, it tends to have a more polished, Southern-private-school feel, and its social scene is more visibly shaped by Greek life, fashion-consciousness, and a traditional SEC-adjacent campus culture. Tulane can absolutely feel preppy too, but its version is looser, more eclectic, and more tied to New Orleans social energy than to a classic country-club vibe.

At Vanderbilt, the preppy reputation is reinforced by the overall campus setting and student presentation. A lot of students describe the atmosphere as socially aware, image-conscious, and influenced by fraternity and sorority life even for people who are not deeply involved in it. The look and feel is often more conventionally affluent and buttoned-up, especially compared with schools that are more artsy or openly quirky.

Tulane has plenty of students from affluent backgrounds and definitely has a strong Greek scene, so the preppy label is not wrong there either. But because it sits in New Orleans, the social atmosphere often feels more relaxed, festive, and personality-driven. You are more likely to get a mix of prep, party, creative, and slightly offbeat energy rather than one dominant polished social style.

Another difference is how each campus interacts with its city. Vanderbilt’s Nashville setting still leaves campus culture feeling fairly self-contained, while Tulane students are constantly shaped by the city around them. That makes Tulane feel less uniformly preppy in practice, even when many students fit that mold on paper.

So if what you mean by preppy is classic, polished, Southern, and socially traditional, Vanderbilt fits that image more clearly. Tulane feels preppy in a wealthier, social, Greek-life-adjacent way, but with more unpredictability and less of a single aesthetic.
