Which Has a More Diverse Campus, Tulane or Rutgers?

Rutgers, particularly its New Brunswick campus, offers the more diverse student body across racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and New Jersey-area geographic backgrounds. Its scale as a major public university and its role serving students from throughout New Jersey bring together commuters, first-generation students, transfer students, multigenerational local families, and students from nearby urban and suburban communities.

Rutgers also has a notably broad range of cultural communities because of New Jersey’s large immigrant and diaspora populations. Students can find substantial Asian American, Black, Latino, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Jewish, Muslim, and other identity-based communities, along with many cultural organizations and events that reflect those populations. The large campus means students encounter people with very different languages, religions, family histories, and educational pathways in everyday classes and student life.

Socioeconomic diversity is likely to feel more visible at Rutgers. As a public flagship, it enrolls many in-state students managing varied financial circumstances, including students who live at home, work while enrolled, or navigate college as the first in their families.

Tulane’s strongest differentiator is cultural immersion in New Orleans: its campus life is shaped by the city’s Black cultural traditions, music, food, civic organizations, and community-engagement opportunities. That can make for an unusually rich local cultural experience, even though Rutgers is more diverse in the composition of its enrolled student population.
