University of Houston or Arizona State for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is location versus national brand reach. University of Houston puts you directly in one of the country’s largest business hubs, which can make internships during the school year much easier to land, especially in corporate finance, banking tied to energy, commercial banking, and accounting-heavy finance roles. Arizona State tends to offer a broader large-university recruiting machine and a wider geographic alumni footprint, but Phoenix finance recruiting is not as concentrated as Houston’s energy and corporate ecosystem.

For internships, UH has a real advantage if you want to work while in school. Being in Houston means access to major companies, banks, energy firms, and middle-market employers close enough for part-time semester internships, which matters a lot in finance because experience stacks early.

ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business is very well known and has scale. That can translate into more structured career resources, larger employer participation, and a broader alumni network across multiple states. If you are not set on Texas and want flexibility to pursue roles in Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, or other large markets, ASU may give you a wider map, though you will still need to be proactive for more competitive finance tracks.

The type of finance job matters here. For corporate finance, commercial banking, treasury, financial analysis, and energy-related finance, UH is especially compelling because Houston employers are right there. For a broader business-school brand and more multi-region alumni reach, ASU has a stronger case.

My lean is University of Houston if your priority is maximizing internships and recruiting access during college, especially if Texas is a place you would be happy to start your career. I would choose Arizona State instead only if you strongly prefer its campus experience or want a less Texas-centered network with reach across a wider set of western markets.
