University of Houston vs UC Berkeley for finance careers: which has better recruiting and alumni network?
I’m trying to choose between these two schools and finance is my main goal after college. I know Berkeley has a big reputation overall, but University of Houston is a lot closer to home for me and would be easier financially.
I’m mostly trying to understand which school would give a student a better path into finance through recruiting, internships, and alumni connections.

UC Berkeley offers the much stronger platform for finance recruiting and alumni reach. Its brand travels nationally, and the Berkeley alumni network is especially deep in investment banking, asset management, private equity, and fintech. For a student targeting competitive front-office finance roles, Berkeley opens more doors earlier and in more markets.
The biggest differentiator is on-campus recruiting. Berkeley is a true target or near-target level school for many finance employers. You will see far more structured pipelines into internships that matter for finance careers, and those internships often lead directly to full-time offers. Houston can place students into finance, but the recruiting is more regional and more tied to energy-related corporate finance, commercial banking, accounting, and local business roles.
The second differentiator is the alumni network. Berkeley’s network is not just large, it is influential in high-finance circles across the country. That matters when you are seeking informational interviews, referrals, and older alumni who know how recruiting works at top firms. University of Houston has a solid network in Houston and Texas business communities, which is valuable if you want to stay local, but it does not have the same reach into national finance pipelines.
The third differentiator is internship access during the school year. Berkeley students benefit from proximity to the Bay Area’s finance, venture, and tech ecosystem, plus a campus culture where many peers are also aiming for selective internships. At Houston, being in a major city is a real advantage, but the finance opportunities nearby skew more toward regional firms and energy-linked business functions than the broad finance spectrum Berkeley feeds into.
Cost still matters. If Houston would leave you with dramatically less debt, that can be a real advantage, especially if your likely path is corporate finance or banking in Texas. But purely on recruiting strength, internship quality, and alumni pull for finance, Berkeley is in a different tier.
