Is it harder to get admitted to Arizona State or Yale?

I’m trying to get a sense of how selective different colleges are when I compare them side by side. Arizona State and Yale are obviously very different schools, but I keep seeing people mention them in the same conversations about admissions chances.

I mostly want to understand which one is generally harder to get into so I can put realistic reach and target schools on my list.

Yale is much harder to get admitted to than Arizona State. Yale has one of the most selective undergraduate admissions processes in the country, with extremely limited space in each entering class and a highly holistic review that weighs grades, course rigor, essays, recommendations, activities, and personal qualities at a very high level. Arizona State, by contrast, is far more accessible and is known for admitting a much broader range of qualified applicants.

One major difference is the academic bar and the way applicants are evaluated. Yale expects outstanding performance in the most challenging classes available, and even many applicants with top grades and strong accomplishments are denied because the pool is so deep. Arizona State does care about academics, but its process is much less restrictive, and many students who meet published academic standards have a realistic path to admission.

Another clear separator is the size and mission of the institutions. Yale enrolls a relatively small undergraduate class and can admit only a tiny share of applicants, which makes it a true reach for almost everyone. Arizona State is a very large public university built to serve many more students, so it simply has far more room to admit qualified applicants.

For building a college list, Yale belongs in the reach category for essentially all students, while Arizona State is often a target or likely depending on your grades, coursework, and residency status.
