Which undergraduate school is generally harder to get into: Arizona State or Duke?

I’m a high school senior comparing Arizona State and Duke, and I’m trying to understand the difference in overall admission selectivity. I know they have very different applicant pools and admissions processes, so I’m looking for a general comparison rather than a year-specific acceptance rate.

Duke is far harder to gain admission to overall than Arizona State. Duke has a highly selective national and international applicant pool, and admitted students typically present exceptional academic records alongside meaningful involvement, strong recommendations, and a compelling application narrative. Arizona State is a large public research university with a substantially broader-access admissions mission and multiple pathways for qualified applicants.

A student applying to Duke should expect admission to be uncertain even with top grades and rigorous coursework. Duke evaluates applicants holistically, so academic strength alone is not enough; sustained impact in activities, intellectual engagement, and clear fit with the university can matter significantly.

Arizona State fits students seeking a major university with extensive program choice, a large campus community, and comparatively accessible admission standards. It still has selective programs, honors opportunities, and competitive majors, but admission to the university as a whole is much less restrictive than admission to Duke.
