Berkeley is one of the country’s top research universities, so the sheer number of faculty-led projects, advanced facilities, and interdisciplinary institutes is much greater. Cal State LA still offers meaningful undergraduate research, but it is not operating at the same research volume or breadth as Berkeley.

For STEM specifically, UC Berkeley usually gives undergraduates the stronger set of research options. At Cal State LA, the smaller scale can make faculty more approachable and may make it easier to get noticed earlier, especially if you are proactive and perform well in class.

If your main question is which school offers the better overall undergraduate research ecosystem in STEM, the answer is UC Berkeley. Cal State LA can be a very good place to do research, especially if you want more direct faculty contact, but Berkeley has the deeper bench of labs, projects, funding, and specialized opportunities. For a student prioritizing breadth and intensity of undergraduate research, Berkeley has the clearer edge.
