Cal State LA vs UC Berkeley for engineering: how do they compare academically and for internships?

For engineering, UC Berkeley is in a different tier academically and professionally. Cal State LA can still lead to solid outcomes, especially for students who want a more teaching-focused environment and may plan to stay in Southern California, but the two schools are not viewed the same way in engineering.

Berkeley tends to fit students who want a highly rigorous, fast-paced program with a lot of ambitious peers around them. Being in the Bay Area also matters: proximity to Silicon Valley and the concentration of startups, labs, and established engineering firms create a very dense network of opportunities, even though competition for them is intense.

Cal State LA makes more sense for students who value smaller-scale classes, a more accessible teaching environment, and a path that may feel less academically cutthroat.
