How does admissions difficulty compare between the University of Wisconsin and Georgia Tech overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Wisconsin is selective but broadly accessible for many strong applicants, while Georgia Tech is a much tougher admit overall, especially outside Georgia and especially for high-demand majors like engineering or computer science. In everyday admissions terms, Georgia Tech sits in a more selective tier. Wisconsin is a well-regarded flagship with solid competition, but it is not usually viewed as being as difficult to enter as Georgia Tech.

Part of the difference comes from mission and applicant pool. Wisconsin enrolls a large class and, as a public flagship, serves many in-state students while still drawing plenty of out-of-state interest. Georgia Tech also has a public mission, but it attracts a very concentrated pool of applicants aiming for STEM, which pushes the level of competition higher across the board.

Major can matter at both schools, but it matters more at Georgia Tech in how people talk about selectivity. Applicants interested in engineering, computing, and similar fields tend to face especially intense competition there. At Wisconsin, some programs are stronger or more selective than others, but the overall admissions environment is usually less compressed.

For a college list, I would treat Georgia Tech as the harder reach and Wisconsin as the more attainable option for the same applicant in most cases. That does not mean Wisconsin is easy, especially for nonresidents, but if the question is which one is tougher to get into overall, Georgia Tech is the clearer answer.
