How does admissions difficulty compare between the University of Wisconsin and Virginia Tech?

In a general sense, the University of Wisconsin–Madison is usually viewed as a bit more selective than Virginia Tech, especially for out-of-state applicants. Wisconsin tends to draw a very large national applicant pool and has especially strong demand for programs like business, engineering, and computer science. Virginia Tech is also selective, but for many applicants it lands slightly closer to the high-match range than Wisconsin does.

That said, the difference is not huge enough to treat them as completely different categories. A student with a strong academic record for one school may still be competitive at the other, and both can become tougher depending on residency and major.

Wisconsin often appeals to students aiming at a flagship with broad national recognition, a classic Big Ten campus environment, and strong academics across many departments. Because it attracts so many applicants from both Wisconsin and out of state, it can feel harder to break into, particularly if you are not an in-state student or are applying to a high-demand area.

Virginia Tech is a school where fit can matter in a slightly different way. Students interested in engineering, technology, architecture, applied science, or a more career-focused public university experience often target it very intentionally. That can make some programs quite competitive, even if the overall admissions picture is a touch less intense than Wisconsin’s.

For building a realistic list, it makes sense to think of Wisconsin as the somewhat tougher admit overall, with Virginia Tech still very selective but often a little more attainable depending on your profile. If you are out of state for both and applying to a popular major, I would still treat each as at least a match-level school unless your academics are clearly above each school’s typical admitted range.
