Is UW–Madison or Georgia Tech more selective for undergraduate admission?

Georgia Tech is generally more selective for undergraduate admission than UW–Madison, particularly for applicants from outside the state. Its applicant pool is heavily concentrated in students with very strong preparation in math, science, engineering, and computing, while available spaces for non-Georgia residents are limited.

UW–Madison is also a highly selective public university, but its overall admission process is less restrictive than Georgia Tech’s. As Wisconsin’s flagship, it enrolls a larger undergraduate class and gives meaningful consideration to Wisconsin residents, so residency can affect the comparison substantially.

For an out-of-state student applying to both schools, Georgia Tech should be treated as the tougher admit. For a Wisconsin resident, UW–Madison may be more attainable because of its state-resident mission, though it is still not a safety for many applicants.

Neither school admits solely by grades or test scores. Georgia Tech will especially look for rigorous quantitative coursework and evidence that an applicant can thrive in its technical academic environment. UW–Madison also values strong academics, course rigor, activities, and fit, but its applicant pool is broader across academic interests. Even without focusing on a major, Georgia Tech belongs in a more reach-oriented category for most applicants, while UW–Madison is selective but can be closer to a target depending on residency and academic record.
