Is UVA or William & Mary better for government?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus intimacy: UVA gives you a larger political ecosystem with more departments, institutes, and alumni reach, while William & Mary offers a smaller, more personal environment where government students often build close relationships with professors early. For government and public policy, both are respected, but UVA tends to have the stronger overall national pull because of its size, visibility, and breadth of opportunities. William & Mary is especially well known for sending students into public service and for giving undergrads direct access to faculty and research.

At UVA, the politics department is very prominent, and the university benefits from strong connections to policy, law, media, and government work through its alumni network. The Batten School also adds a real public policy presence that can matter if your interests extend beyond political theory or American government into policy analysis and applied work. UVA’s larger student body can mean more competition for certain positions, but it also usually means more student organizations, speakers, internships, and specialized coursework.

William & Mary stands out for undergraduate focus. Its government department has a strong reputation, and the smaller-campus setting can make it easier to get mentoring, recommendation letters, and meaningful faculty interaction. It also has a long track record in public service, and for a student who wants discussion-heavy classes and a more close-knit academic culture, that matters a lot.

If the question is pure reputation and opportunity in government-related fields, UVA has a slight edge. If the question is where you may get more individualized attention as an undergraduate government major, William & Mary is very compelling.
