For business, is UVA or Brown the better college choice for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure versus flexibility. UVA gives you a clear undergraduate business path through the McIntire School of Commerce, with a built-in curriculum in areas like finance, accounting, marketing, and management, plus very established recruiting for business roles. Brown gives you much more academic freedom through the Open Curriculum, but it does not offer a traditional undergraduate business major, so you would need to build a business-related path through economics, applied math, public policy, or entrepreneurship.

If your priority is direct business training and undergraduate career preparation, UVA has the clearer advantage. McIntire is specifically designed for students who want business-focused coursework and professional outcomes, and UVA has a long-standing pipeline into consulting, finance, and other business fields. That matters because you would not need to piece together the same level of practical business exposure on your own.

Brown can still work very well for business, especially if you are intellectually curious and want to combine business interests with something else, like computer science, psychology, or international relations. Brown students do land strong business jobs, but the route is less pre-professional and more self-directed. For some students that is exciting; for others it feels like extra work compared with having a dedicated commerce program.

For an undergraduate mainly interested in business, I would lean UVA. Brown is the more flexible and exploratory option, but UVA is the one more intentionally built to give undergrads business-specific academics, recruiting access, and preparation for business careers.
