Anyone know of funny college essays that actually worked?
I'm applying to several schools this fall and keep reading that your essay should stand out, but be authentic. A lot of my friends say their essays are super serious or emotional, but I tend to use humor when talking about myself.
Do you know of any college essay examples that used humor or were written to be deliberately funny and still got the student admitted? I'm a little nervous that being funny might come off as not taking it seriously. If anyone has links or can share their own experience (like did you write a funny essay and get in?), that would be super helpful.
Trying to get some inspiration and confidence if I go with a quirky approach!

Humor can absolutely work in college essays, as long as it feels natural to you and still reveals something meaningful about who you are. Admissions readers really do appreciate essays that make them smile or give a fresh perspective, but you want your essay to be more than just a stand-up routine—you still need to show self-reflection and make sure the reader learns something genuine about you.
A well-known essay that has floated around online described a student’s deep passion for Costco and how bulk shopping shaped their worldview—this playful, tongue-in-cheek approach was fun to read, but also managed to highlight curiosity, family, and a unique perspective. Another example: a student wrote their essay as a “menu” describing their personality traits as if they were food items. This quirky concept stood out and illustrated their creativity while still touching on real experiences.
If you want to try a humorous approach, try to:
- Use wit to highlight a real experience, challenge, or value.
- Make sure the reader comes away with a deeper understanding of who you are.
- Avoid sarcasm that could be misinterpreted, or trying to be funny just for the sake of it—let it come from your natural voice.
- End with a meaningful reflection, even if the story itself is lighthearted.
Don’t worry if your essay doesn’t sound ultra-serious. If humor is how you usually communicate, it can be a great way to let your real personality shine, provided you also show depth. Admissions officers read countless essays—a well-executed, funny essay can be a breath of fresh air!
Remember, authenticity is key. If you’re genuinely funny in person, let that come through. Just make sure your humor reveals your character, perspective, or growth. Good luck, and embrace your unique voice!
