Which is generally considered more prestigious: Tulane or USC?

The biggest practical tradeoff is national name recognition versus a more niche but well-liked reputation. USC is usually seen as having broader national prestige, especially because of its size, visibility in Los Angeles, strong alumni network, and prominence in fields like film, business, engineering, and communications. Tulane has a positive reputation too, but it is more often thought of as regionally distinctive and especially known for its New Orleans setting, public health, service culture, and strong undergraduate experience.

In a general reputation sense, most students, employers, and academics would place USC ahead of Tulane.

Tulane is still a respected university, and in some circles people speak very highly of it. It often stands out for student life, community engagement, and certain programs, and it can feel especially well regarded in parts of the South and among people familiar with selective private universities. But it usually does not carry the same across-the-board name power as USC.

So if the question is simply which school is more widely viewed as prestigious overall, USC is the clearer answer. Tulane is respected and attractive to many applicants, but USC has the stronger general reputation in the eyes of the broader public and in many professional settings.
