Northeastern is in Boston’s Fenway area, close to Back Bay, the MFA, and other student-heavy neighborhoods, but Boston tends to feel smaller, easier to navigate, and less overwhelming than New York.

For day-to-day city immersion, Columbia usually feels stronger. Even though Columbia has a defined campus, stepping outside it means you are still in New York, and the scale of the city changes how students live. It is common for student life to spill into different neighborhoods, and the range of things to do off campus is hard to match.

Northeastern is also very urban, but the rhythm can feel a little more contained. Boston has a big student population, strong public transit, and plenty to do, yet it often feels like a college city more than a city that completely swallows the college. Northeastern’s co-op culture also connects students to the city in a practical way through work, which is a major plus, but that is slightly different from the everyday all-consuming city energy you seem to be asking about.
