Northeastern vs. Boston University: Which Has Better Dorm Life?

For a student who wants a compact campus and a more immediately social residential experience, Northeastern tends to have the edge. Its residence halls sit close together around the main campus, so it is easy to run into classmates, attend floor or living-learning community events, and meet people without leaving the university environment. First-year housing is still varied, but the campus layout makes even a quieter hall feel connected to the larger student community.

Northeastern is especially appealing for students who value newer or more modern-feeling housing options as they progress beyond the first year. Some first-year rooms are traditional doubles and can be modest, but upper-level options often include suite- or apartment-style living. The tradeoff is that housing selection can be competitive, and particular buildings and room types are not guaranteed.

Boston University may fit a student who enjoys an urban, less self-contained residential experience. BU housing stretches along Commonwealth Avenue, with large traditional dorms, smaller brownstones, and specialty communities. That variety can be appealing, but it also means dorm life is less uniform: a student in a large residence hall may find a busy, built-in social scene, while someone in a smaller building may experience a quieter, more independent atmosphere.

BU’s long, city-integrated campus also means meeting friends often requires more intentional planning and transit or walking between areas.
