How difficult is it to get into Northeastern compared with UVA?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UVA’s selectivity changes a lot depending on whether you are in-state or out-of-state, while Northeastern’s admissions are more uniformly unpredictable because of huge application volume and its enrollment strategies. In broad terms, both should be treated as selective schools, but for many applicants Northeastern can feel especially hard to predict, and UVA is often tougher for out-of-state students than people expect. If you are a Virginia resident, UVA may be more attainable than Northeastern; if you are applying from outside Virginia, the gap narrows or can even flip.

UVA has a clear public-school dynamic. It gives a meaningful advantage to Virginia residents, so in-state applicants are not competing in quite the same way as out-of-state applicants. For nonresidents, UVA is a very serious reach unless the application is strong across the board.

Northeastern is private, so it does not have the in-state versus out-of-state split, but it has become known for being very difficult to read. A lot of well-qualified students apply, and the school pays close attention to enrollment management, demonstrated interest, and application round. That means students with strong grades can still see unpredictable outcomes.

In terms of applicant profile, UVA often looks especially strong for students with rigorous coursework, high academic consistency, and a clear fit for a large flagship environment. Northeastern also values strong academics, but applicants sometimes benefit from showing a more specific connection to its co-op model, urban Boston setting, and preprofessional energy.

For college list planning, I would classify both as reaches unless you are an in-state Virginia applicant with very strong academics, in which case UVA may sit closer to high target or low reach territory while Northeastern still leans reach because of volatility. If you are out of state, I would treat both as reaches and assume neither is predictable enough to anchor your list.
