Is Northeastern harder to get into than Harvard?

The key distinction is that Harvard is substantially harder to gain admission to overall, while Northeastern can feel unusually unpredictable because it receives a very large, highly self-selecting applicant pool and uses several enrollment options. A student who is academically viable for Northeastern should not treat that as evidence that Harvard is within reach, since Harvard rejects many applicants with near-perfect academic records and exceptional activities. Northeastern is highly selective in its own right, but its admissions bar is not equivalent to Harvard’s.

Harvard’s applicant pool is more concentrated at the very top academically and includes applicants with national or international distinction, extensive leadership, major research, athletic recruitment, and other rare accomplishments. Its review is also exceptionally holistic: outstanding grades and testing alone do not make an applicant likely to be admitted.

Northeastern’s selectivity is influenced by factors that can make outcomes look counterintuitive, including Early Decision, Early Action, campus or program choice, and demonstrated interest. Applying to a less typical program or being open to particular pathways can affect an applicant’s options there. That does not mean Northeastern is easy; many strong, well-qualified students are denied.
