Is Northeastern or NC State generally harder to get into?

The biggest practical difference is that NC State’s difficulty changes sharply based on North Carolina residency and major, while Northeastern is highly selective for applicants nationwide. NC State gives a meaningful admissions advantage to North Carolina residents, and its engineering and computer science pathways can be notably more competitive than the university overall. Northeastern receives an exceptionally large national and international applicant pool, so strong grades alone often do not make admission predictable.

For a typical out-of-state applicant, Northeastern is generally harder to get into overall. Its admissions process is particularly unpredictable because many applicants present very strong academic records, substantial activities, and polished applications. Applying Early Decision can affect an applicant’s strategy there, but it is a binding commitment and should only be used if Northeastern is clearly affordable and the first choice.

NC State is still a selective STEM-focused public university, especially for applicants seeking engineering, computer science, or other capacity-limited programs. An out-of-state applicant to one of those fields should not treat it as an easy alternative to Northeastern. In-state applicants, particularly those with coursework and grades aligned with their intended STEM major, often have a more favorable path at NC State than at Northeastern.
