UVA vs Williams for economics: which is better for undergrad econ?

I’m a high school junior trying to narrow down my college list and I’m looking at UVA and Williams for economics. I know both are strong schools, but I’m trying to understand which one tends to be better for an undergrad econ major in terms of teaching, opportunities, and overall fit.

I’m mostly interested in how the economics experience compares at a big public university versus a small liberal arts college.

For undergraduate economics specifically, Williams has the edge if your priority is close faculty access, discussion-heavy classes, and a department built around undergrads rather than graduate programs. Its small liberal arts setting means econ students are taught directly by professors, classes stay relatively intimate, and the school has an especially strong reputation for sending students into top graduate programs, research roles, and finance-related paths.

The biggest difference is teaching structure. At Williams, economics is one of the marquee majors, so undergrads get a lot of attention from faculty and usually have easier access to office hours, recommendation letters, and research mentoring. UVA has excellent economists and many more course options, but the experience can feel less personal, especially in larger introductory and intermediate classes.

The second differentiator is academic environment. Williams is very undergraduate-centered, which matters in a field like economics where writing, theory, and quantitative reasoning all benefit from direct feedback. UVA gives you the energy and scale of a major university, with more interdisciplinary possibilities through a large arts and sciences ecosystem, but you may need to be more proactive to build close relationships in the department.

Opportunities look different rather than weaker at either school. UVA offers the advantages of a large alumni network, more student organizations, and the resources that come with a flagship university.

But if the question is which school is better for the undergrad econ experience itself, Williams is the more distinctive choice.
