UVA vs Bucknell for finance: which school is better for recruiting and career outcomes?

I’m trying to decide between UVA and Bucknell and I’m interested in finance. Both schools seem to have strong alumni networks, but I’m not sure how they compare for getting internships and full-time jobs in banking or related finance roles.

I’m mostly looking for a school that will give me the best recruiting opportunities and help set me up well after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and reach versus smaller-school access. UVA gives you a much larger finance recruiting ecosystem, especially through McIntire, with broader on-campus presence from major banks and stronger visibility in markets like New York, Charlotte, and beyond. Bucknell can still place well into finance, and its alumni network is notably loyal, but the pipeline is narrower and often more relationship-driven rather than as deep or structured as UVA’s.

For recruiting, UVA has the clearer edge. McIntire has a very established reputation with employers, and even outside the business school, UVA students interested in finance benefit from a large alumni base, active finance clubs, and a campus that regularly attracts top firms. That matters for both internships and full-time hiring because more firms, more alumni, and more student infrastructure usually translates into more shots on goal.

Bucknell is not a weak option at all. It has a strong record of sending students into finance, especially through tight alumni connections and solid undergraduate teaching. In some cases, a motivated Bucknell student who networks aggressively can do extremely well. The difference is that Bucknell recruiting tends to feel less automatic and less expansive, particularly for highly competitive banking paths.

Career outcomes also favor UVA in terms of breadth. If you later shift from banking to consulting, corporate finance, asset management, or another business path, UVA usually gives you a wider platform and more brand recognition nationally. Bucknell’s outcomes are respectable, but they are more concentrated and can depend more heavily on how effectively you tap the network early.

If your main goal is maximizing finance recruiting opportunities and keeping the most doors open after graduation, UVA is the stronger choice. Bucknell makes more sense if you strongly prefer its smaller environment and are comfortable being more proactive to reach similar outcomes.
