Is UVA or Colgate better for economics?

I’m trying to decide between UVA and Colgate and economics is the major I’m most interested in. Both schools seem strong in different ways, so I’m having a hard time telling which one would be the better fit for an economics student.

I’m mostly thinking about the strength of the econ department and the overall opportunities for someone who wants to study economics in college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and structure: UVA gives you a larger economics ecosystem with more course variety, faculty, research activity, and recruiting connections, while Colgate offers a smaller liberal arts setting where economics classes are likely to feel more personal and discussion-based. For an econ student, that difference affects not just classroom experience but also access to specialized electives, policy-oriented resources, and internship pipelines. UVA also benefits from being a major public university with a very established economics department and strong visibility with employers and grad programs.

In terms of department strength alone, UVA has the edge. Its economics offerings are broader, and students typically have more room to explore different areas like macroeconomics, micro theory, econometrics, public policy, and related interdisciplinary work. UVA’s larger alumni network and the school’s recruiting presence are especially useful if you are interested in finance, consulting, policy, or research-heavy paths.

Colgate is still a very good place to study economics, especially if you want close faculty relationships and a classic liberal arts environment. You may find it easier to get to know professors well, which can matter for mentorship, recommendation letters, and seminar-style learning. The tradeoff is that the department is smaller, so the range of upper-level courses and the overall economics infrastructure will not be as extensive as UVA’s.

If your priority is the strongest overall economics platform, UVA is the more compelling choice. Colgate makes more sense when the small-campus experience and tighter faculty access matter enough that you are willing to give up some breadth and large-university opportunity in return.
