Is UVA or the University of Maryland better for computer science?

For computer science specifically, the University of Maryland usually has the stronger overall reputation and a more established identity in CS. Maryland is especially well known for its depth in computing, its proximity to Washington, DC and major federal research hubs, and the fact that CS is one of the university’s most prominent academic areas. UVA has a respected CS program too, but its broader reputation tends to be spread across more fields rather than centered as strongly on computer science.

Maryland tends to fit the student who wants a campus where CS feels big, visible, and closely connected to research and technical recruiting. The department is large, offers many course options and specialization paths, and benefits from access to internships and employers in the DC, College Park, and broader East Coast corridor. For a student who wants to be surrounded by a lot of other serious CS students and sees computing as the main academic priority, Maryland often stands out.

UVA makes more sense for the student who wants a strong CS education inside a university with a more traditional liberal arts feel and a distinctive campus culture. Its program is well regarded, and students can still access solid research, recruiting, and alumni outcomes, but the university’s identity is not as centered on CS in the same way Maryland’s is. Someone who wants to combine computer science with a broader humanities or interdisciplinary college experience may be especially drawn to UVA.

In straightforward reputation terms for CS alone, Maryland gets the edge. In overall university prestige outside the major, some students may perceive UVA as having a slightly stronger brand in certain circles, but that does not automatically translate into a stronger computer science program.
