Is UVA or Boston University better for communications?

The biggest tradeoff is specialized communications training in a major media city at Boston University versus a broader, less directly preprofessional path at UVA. BU has a dedicated College of Communication with established programs in communication, journalism, advertising, film and television, and public relations, plus direct access to internships in Boston during the school year. UVA is a more traditional university setting with strong academics and excellent overall reputation, but it does not have a standalone undergraduate communications school in the same way BU does.

For communications specifically, BU is usually the clearer match. Its program is built around the field itself, so the curriculum, student media, faculty backgrounds, and recruiting ecosystem are more tightly connected to communications careers. Being in Boston also matters in a practical way because internships, agency work, media organizations, and networking are much easier to do while classes are in session.

At UVA, you can absolutely build toward communications-related work, especially through media studies, politics, sociology, English, commerce-related interests, or student journalism and communications organizations. The advantage there is the classic residential college experience, strong school spirit, and a very respected degree with flexibility if your interests shift. The limitation is that you may need to piece together the communications path more intentionally rather than stepping into an already structured communications pipeline.
