Is Notre Dame or Indiana University better for finance careers?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out which school would give me a stronger path into finance. I know both Notre Dame and Indiana have business programs, but I’m mostly interested in which one seems to help students land better finance jobs or internships after graduation.

I’m looking at long-term career outcomes more than campus fit right now, so I’m trying to understand which school has the stronger reputation in finance.

Notre Dame has the edge for finance careers, especially if you are thinking about high-prestige investment banking, buy-side roles, or national recruiting right after graduation. Its Mendoza College of Business has a very strong alumni network, the Notre Dame brand travels well beyond the Midwest, and employers tend to view it as a more selective target or near-target for finance hiring. For long-term reputation and access, Notre Dame is the safer answer.

One major differentiator is recruiting reach. Notre Dame places well into Chicago, New York, and other major finance markets, and its alumni base is unusually loyal and active in helping students break in. That matters a lot in finance, where informational interviews, referrals, and early internship pipelines can shape your options quickly.

Indiana is still a serious contender because the Kelley School of Business is excellent and highly respected by employers. Kelley has a particularly strong structure for career preparation, and students in its top programs, especially the Investment Banking Workshop, can do extremely well. The catch is that outcomes at Indiana are more dependent on whether you earn a spot in those selective, high-powered tracks and how aggressively you use them.

Another difference is consistency of outcomes across the student body. At Notre Dame, strong finance access is built more broadly into the school’s brand and alumni network. At Indiana, the ceiling is very high, but the standout results are more concentrated among students who distinguish themselves within Kelley and secure the right workshop or leadership opportunities.

For pure finance reputation and long-term signaling power, Notre Dame comes out ahead. Indiana can absolutely get students to top finance jobs, but it more often rewards students who navigate a specific internal path, while Notre Dame tends to offer stronger built-in pull from the start.
