Is Caltech or Northwestern harder to get into?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Caltech has a much smaller class and a far narrower academic focus, while Northwestern admits a larger and more academically broad group of students. In raw selectivity terms, Caltech is typically at least as hard, and often harder, to get into overall because it enrolls very few undergraduates and looks for an unusually strong match in advanced math and science. Northwestern is also extremely selective, but it draws from a wider range of academic and extracurricular profiles across many schools and majors.

What makes this comparison tricky is that the two schools are selective in different ways. Caltech is tiny, intensely STEM-centered, and tends to reward applicants who already show exceptional preparation for high-level quantitative work. A student with top grades and scores but no real evidence of deep math, physics, engineering, or research interest may be much less compelling there than at Northwestern.

Northwestern, by contrast, is looking across engineering, journalism, music, theater, social sciences, humanities, and more. That makes its applicant pool enormous and highly competitive, but also more varied. An applicant can be outstanding in many different ways at Northwestern, whereas Caltech’s academic fit is much narrower.

So if the question is purely “which is harder to get into,” Caltech usually has the tougher admissions hurdle for the specific students who are actually realistic Caltech applicants, because the bar for academic fit is so exacting and the class is so small. Northwestern is not meaningfully “easy” by comparison, though. For most applicants, both should be treated as reaches, with Caltech feeling even less predictable unless your profile clearly aligns with its very intense STEM culture.
