Does Washington University in St. Louis or Wesleyan feel more like a liberal arts college?

Wesleyan feels much more like a liberal arts college day to day. It is a true liberal arts college with a smaller undergraduate population, an academic culture centered on broad exploration, and a campus environment where discussion-heavy classes and close faculty contact are built into the experience rather than something you have to seek out within a larger university. WashU can offer small classes and strong professor relationships too, but the overall feel is still that of a mid-sized research university.

The biggest difference is structure. Wesleyan is almost entirely undergraduate-focused in the way students experience campus life, so the community tends to feel more intimate and self-contained. At WashU, even though undergrads get a lot of attention, you are still part of a larger institution with multiple schools, graduate programs, and a more segmented academic setup.

Classroom culture also points toward Wesleyan. Its identity is closely tied to seminar discussion, interdisciplinary thinking, and the kind of intellectual atmosphere people usually mean when they say a school has a liberal arts feel. WashU has plenty of humanities and social science strength, but it is also known for pre-professional pathways, research, and a more university-style balance across many divisions.

The social vibe is different as well. Wesleyan tends to feel more tight-knit, quirky, and collectively shaped by undergraduates, which often translates into stronger small-community energy. WashU has active campus life and close communities within it, but the scale and university setting make it feel broader and less like a single, compact liberal arts bubble.
