Is Washington University in St. Louis or Cornell a more fun college experience?

Cornell usually feels like the more memorable overall college experience, while WashU often feels easier and more comfortable day to day. Cornell has a bigger, more traditional campus culture, a stronger sense of school identity, and the kind of setting where weekend life is heavily shaped by the university itself. WashU tends to be more polished and lower-stress socially, with easier access to a major city and a campus atmosphere many students describe as friendlier and more manageable.

Cornell’s biggest advantage here is intensity and scale. It has Big Red traditions, prominent athletics and campus events, and a residential setup where a lot of social life stays tightly tied to the university. Ithaca also pushes students to make their own fun together, whether that means club events, outdoor trips, house parties, performances, or late-night campus routines. For many students, that creates a stronger "classic college" feeling than WashU does.

WashU’s strongest point is that fun can be more effortless on an ordinary week. The campus is next to Forest Park and close to neighborhoods like the Delmar Loop and the Central West End, so getting off campus for restaurants, concerts, or just a change of scene is easier than at Cornell. Socially, WashU often comes across as less intense and less all-consuming, which can make the experience feel more balanced if you want room to breathe.

The tradeoff is weather and mood. Cornell’s winters and academic pressure can be real drags, and the campus can feel isolated if you do not like the upstate setting. WashU has fewer of those environmental extremes, but some students find its school spirit and campus-wide energy less distinctive.
