Tufts vs Barnard for urban campus life: which feels more city-integrated?

Barnard feels much more city-integrated. It sits directly in Morningside Heights in Manhattan, shares the Columbia neighborhood and surrounding streets, and students step off campus straight into New York City life rather than into a mostly residential college area.

At Barnard, the city is part of the daily routine, not just a nearby option. You can walk to subway lines, cafes, bookstores, internships, museums, performances, and neighborhoods beyond campus without needing a shuttle or a longer transit setup. Even though Barnard has a defined campus, it functions like a small academic home embedded inside a dense urban environment.

Tufts has access to Boston, but the feel is noticeably less urban day to day. Its Medford and Somerville location is more campus-centered and residential, with hills, quads, and a distinct separation between school space and downtown Boston. Students absolutely use Boston for internships, restaurants, and entertainment, but it usually feels like going into the city rather than already living inside it.
