Is RPI or Columbia better for city life as a college student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Columbia gives you immediate, everyday access to a major city, while RPI gives you a smaller, quieter urban setting that feels much less immersive. At Columbia, you are in Manhattan with subway access, dense walkable neighborhoods, museums, restaurants, parks, internships, and events built into daily life. At RPI, you are in Troy, which has some restaurants, coffee shops, local events, and an approachable downtown, but it is not the kind of place where the city itself becomes a central part of student life in the same way.

For pure city life, Columbia is on a completely different level. Morningside Heights has its own neighborhood feel, and students can easily get to other parts of New York for food, concerts, internships, nightlife, and cultural events without needing a car. If your idea of a good college environment includes wandering into new neighborhoods, trying places on a whim, and feeling like there is always something happening nearby, Columbia fits that much more naturally.

RPI is not isolated, but the off-campus experience is more limited and more local. Troy has a real downtown and some charm, especially with cafes, small businesses, and a more manageable pace, but it will feel far smaller and less dynamic than New York. A lot of student social life at RPI stays more campus-centered, and the surrounding area tends to supplement college life rather than define it.

So if city life is a major factor and you want the stronger day-to-day off-campus experience, Columbia is the clearer pick. RPI makes more sense only if you prefer a smaller environment where you can still leave campus and explore, but without the intensity, scale, and constant motion of New York City.
