George Washington University is the clearer choice for city life and walkability. GW is embedded right in Washington, DC, with academic buildings, residence halls, restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, pharmacies, and internships all woven into the same few neighborhoods. At RPI, you can reach parts of Troy on foot, but the day-to-day feel is much more campus-centered and far less urban in scale.

One big difference is how the campus connects to the city. GW’s Foggy Bottom location is not separated from DC, so walking off campus often just feels like continuing down the same street into more city blocks, Metro stops, offices, museums, and commercial areas. You do not need a car to live a very full student life there, and public transit is a real part of daily life.

At RPI, you are in Troy, which does have restaurants, cafes, and some downtown activity, but it is a smaller city with a more limited footprint around campus. The area immediately around RPI is hilly, and many students describe the school as having more of a defined campus bubble, even though downtown Troy is accessible. That makes the off-campus experience feel less seamless than at GW.

Another concrete difference is what "city life" means at each school.
