Is RPI or Boston College better for finance?
I’m a junior trying to narrow down my college list, and I’m interested in finance as a career. Both RPI and Boston College seem like strong schools, but they feel very different in terms of academics and recruiting.
I’m trying to understand which one is generally the better choice for someone who wants to break into finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Boston College gives you a more established path into finance recruiting, while RPI is stronger if you want a more technical, quantitative college experience that could also connect to finance-related roles. BC has a well-known business program through the Carroll School of Management, a large alumni presence in finance, and much closer ties to Boston-area firms. RPI is respected for math, engineering, data, and analytical training, but it is not as directly associated with traditional undergraduate finance pipelines.
For finance specifically, Boston College is the clearer choice in most cases. If your goal is investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, or similar roles right after college, BC tends to offer the more natural setup: finance coursework, student organizations focused on markets and investing, and alumni networks that are especially useful for internships and recruiting. Location matters here too, since being near Boston can make networking and in-semester opportunities more accessible.
RPI can still work well for finance, especially if you are interested in quant-oriented paths, fintech, risk, analytics, or roles where strong technical skills stand out. An RPI student with a strong GPA, internships, and networking can absolutely reach finance, but the path is usually less built-in and may require more individual effort. It is better thought of as a strong technical school that can lead into finance, rather than a school with finance as one of its central undergraduate strengths.
So if the question is simply which school is better for finance, Boston College has the edge by a noticeable margin. RPI becomes more compelling only if you specifically want a highly technical environment and are open to shaping your own route into the field.
