Boston University has the edge for internships and co-op opportunities, especially if your priority is access, volume, and year-round proximity to employers. BU’s location in Boston matters a lot for STEM students because it puts you near hospitals, biotech firms, startups, research labs, consulting companies, and large employers that regularly hire undergraduates during the semester as well as over the summer.

That location difference is the biggest practical separator. At BU, students can pursue part-time internships during the academic year without needing to relocate, and Boston’s transit access makes it easier to combine classes with work experience. RPI has good employer connections, especially in engineering and technical fields, but Troy offers a much smaller local market, so opportunities are more likely to depend on summer recruiting or traveling elsewhere.

BU also benefits from the scale and diversity of its employer network. For STEM, that can be especially useful if your interests shift between engineering, data science, healthcare, computer science, product work, or research-based industry roles. RPI is well respected by technical employers and can absolutely place students into strong internships, but its pipeline is more concentrated and tends to feel narrower outside core engineering and computing paths.

Another factor is how each school structures experiential learning. BU has established co-op options through certain programs and a strong culture of career-connected urban education, while RPI is better known for internships, research, and project-based technical preparation than for a broad co-op identity.
