Is USC or MIT harder to get into?

MIT is harder to get into than USC. Both are highly selective, but MIT sits in a smaller, more academically narrow applicant pool and is widely viewed as one of the most difficult colleges in the country for admission. USC is very competitive too, but it admits a broader range of students across many schools and majors.

One big difference is institutional focus. MIT is centered heavily on STEM and attracts applicants with exceptional strength in advanced math, science, research, and technical problem-solving, so the bar is unusually high even within an already elite pool. USC, by contrast, enrolls students across engineering, business, cinema, arts, communications, and many other areas, which makes its admissions landscape more varied.

Another differentiator is class size and scale. MIT is much smaller, which means fewer seats overall and less room to shape a class through volume. USC is a large private university with more undergraduate spots, even though demand is very high.

The applicant profile also differs in a meaningful way. At MIT, being an outstanding student is usually just the starting point, and many applicants have top-tier quantitative preparation. At USC, the strongest applicants are also excellent, but admissions can look more broadly across academic interests, creative work, leadership, and fit with specific programs.

USC should still be approached as a reach for many strong students, but it is not usually considered as difficult to enter as MIT.
