Is USC or Vanderbilt generally harder to get into for college admissions?
I’m trying to get a realistic sense of how these two schools compare in selectivity. I know both are very competitive, but I’m mostly wondering which one is generally considered harder to get into overall.
I’m comparing them as part of my college list and want to understand the admissions difficulty in a broad sense.

In broad terms, Vanderbilt is usually viewed as slightly harder to get into overall. Both USC and Vanderbilt are extremely selective private universities, but Vanderbilt tends to have a somewhat more restrictive admissions landscape, especially in regular decision. USC is also very difficult, yet its larger undergraduate size and wider range of programs can make the selectivity picture a bit more varied by major and applicant pool.
For a student building a realistic list, it helps to think of Vanderbilt as a place where there is very little margin for weakness anywhere in the application. Strong grades in demanding courses, high-level extracurricular impact, and polished essays all matter a lot there. Applicants who are aiming at Vanderbilt usually need to look compelling across the board, not just academically strong.
USC is still firmly in reach-school territory for most applicants, but the experience of applying can differ depending on what you are targeting. Some USC schools and majors, especially in areas like film, business, or engineering, can feel even more competitive than the university overall. At the same time, USC’s broader scale and multiple academic pathways mean admissions difficulty is not always as uniform as it can feel at Vanderbilt.
So if your question is simply which school is harder in the broadest sense, Vanderbilt is the one most people would name. USC is close enough that you should still treat both as highly unpredictable reaches unless your profile is exceptional.
